13 ARTISTS IN OOSTEREILAND PRISON
A Reality Show for Human Rights
An international project to examine how isolation affects the creative process begins on 1 August when thirteen artists from nine countries enter solitary cells at the Oostereiland Prison in Hoorn. The volunteers include sculptors, painters, photographers and performance artists from Europe, the United States, Africa and Japan.
Aim of the unique art event 13 ISOLATIONS is to examine how 29 days and nights of solitary confinement affect imagination, creativity and artistic commitment (endeavor?). Living and working in strict isolation for 23 hours a day, the prisoners will be filmed and the images streamed world-wide on the Internet via www.13isolations.com, allowing the largest audience ever to follow a live art event.
The artists will arrive in Amsterdam by train and plane on 29 July. On Wednesday 30 July at 18:00 they will be guests of the Melkweg Cafe, "Eat at Jo's".
On Thursday 31 July at 17:00 they will be guests of Tong Ah Chinese - Indonesian Restaurant, followed by a press party at the Amsterdam Hilton with DJ Koldun, at 20:00.
On Friday 1 August the artists will be transported to Oostereiland.
The prisoners will be provided only food, water and art materials, will have no contact with each other and have no telephone or computer connection to the outside world. Given just one hour a day of freedom to shower and exercise outside their cells, their lives will mirror the experience of millions of innocent and powerless people living in conditions of poverty, forced labor, human trafficking, political repression, discrimination and wrongful imprisonment.
An exhibition of the completed work in Oostereiland Prison, will be open to the public from Saturday, 30 August to 14 September.
On the opening day visitors will be able to visit the cells and talk to the artists.
Live video streaming for the event will be provided by Streamzilla and the Internet connection provided by Online.
The City of Hoorn has offered Stichting Episodes, organizers of the event, the use of the prison cells and the courtyard as part of their cultural season.
Local art organizations have also been invited to exhibit their work, and the city plans to show three films in the prison courtyard during the event.
